Physics Tutoring

Physics tutor in Durham

Most physics problems are maths problems wearing a physics costume. Students lose marks less often because they don’t understand the physics, and more often because they haven’t been shown how to turn a word problem into an equation.

I taught Mathematical Physics at Durham University for 15 years, so that translation, from a described situation to the maths underneath it, is something I spend real time on rather than treating as obvious.

What I cover

GCSE and Combined Science

Available as Triple Science, where Physics is its own GCSE, or as part of Combined Science, covering forces and motion, energy, waves, electricity and circuits, magnetism and electromagnetism, the particle model of matter, and atomic structure and radioactivity.

How lessons work

Tthe same topics return in far more depth alongside new ones, mechanics, electricity, materials, waves and optics, fields, and nuclear and particle physics, with quantum physics usually the point where formula recall alone stops being enough.

All exam boards: AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC.

Where marks are usually lost

Rarely on the physics concept itself. Almost always on the step just before it, turning a described situation into the right equation, then carrying units and significant figures through correctly once you’re there. That translation step, not the underlying idea, is where I focus.
