Maths Tutoring

Maths tutor in Durham, GCSE and A Level

Maths is where I’ve spent the most time, both teaching at Durham University for 15 years and tutoring privately for more than a decade. It’s also the subject nearly every one of my reviews is about.

If your child is behind, it’s rarely because they can’t do maths. Usually a gap opened up somewhere earlier and everything since has been built on top of it, unnoticed. Finding that gap is where we start, not the syllabus in front of them.

What I cover

GCSE and Combined Science

Foundation and Higher tier, covering number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry and measures, and probability and statistics, with the tier decision often worth discussing rather than fixed early on.

A Level Maths

Splits into Pure Maths, Statistics and Mechanics. Pure Maths takes algebra, calculus and trigonometry to a much greater depth than GCSE. Statistics builds on the data handling started at GCSE. Mechanics applies the pure maths to physical situations, forces, motion and the like, and is usually where the gap between knowing a method and knowing when to use it shows up most clearly.

All exam boards: AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC.

Where marks are usually lost

For 15 years I taught undergraduates at Durham, all of whom had the grades to get in. What surprised me was how many still couldn’t apply what they’d learnt, they could do the pure maths perfectly on its own, then freeze the moment it turned up inside a mechanics problem. That’s what a good grade can hide, and it shows up most clearly at A Level, where the specification splits into Pure, Statistics and Mechanics.

The other big one, at every level: not laying working out clearly, which loses method marks even when the final answer is close. The final answer is usually worth one mark. Everything before it is worth the rest.
